It's not your fault!
All magnetic media, from audio cassettes to VHS and miniDV tapes, have a very thin layer of lubrication on the surface of the tape; this layer protects both the magnetic layer that stores footage and the heads of playback equipment. The issue is that this layer can act as a Petri dish for mold colonies, even under the best circumstances and most ideal storage conditions, mold can take hold and grow on the reels of a videotape.

Videotape manufacturers understood the long‑term storage issues and worked to develop lubrication that would do its job without allowing mold growth, but given enough time even the most sophisticated chemical compositions cannot prevent nature from taking its course.

Mold-damaged videotapes are both a potential health risk and susceptible to further damage:
The white powder on your tapes consists of active mold spores. Opening a cassette shell in your living room or using a household fan releases these spores into your home’s air. We utilize professional containment and decontamination protocols to keep us safe while we work to salvage footage.

Videotape is fragile magnetic data. Using cotton swabs, alcohol, or other recommended DIY methods can permanently strip the magnetic oxide layer right off the plastic base or create an irreversible chemical reaction that prevents playback entirely.

If you put a moldy tape into your VCR or camcorder, the mold instantly transfers to the playback heads. Every clean tape you play after that can become exposed and put at risk.
